GEORGIA: Sherman’s Successful Progress; He Marches Triumphantly Through Georgia (11/24/1864)

WASHINGTON; Wednesday, Nov. 23.
The Richmond papers of Monday, just received here, contain telegrams from Macon, Ga., dated Saturday. They state that SHERMAN's force was marching rapidly on Macon, and report his advance as having reached the outskirts of the city. They have no hope that COBB's militia will be able to bold Macon.
At Griffin we captured a portion of the Legislature.
SHERMAN, in his march thus far, spread out his forces, sweeping a wide swathe of devastation and creating universal panic.
SHERMAN's other column is reported as moving on Augusta and Milledgeville. The Richmond papers state that they have other news, but that as we are exclusively dependent on them for information, they do not mean to gratify us by communicating it.
WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Richmond papers of the 21st, Monday last, give the thrilling information that SHERMAN is pursuing his grand movement with magnificent success, creating the wildest consternation throughout rebeldom. He is, according to these papers, cutting a forty mile swath through the very heart of rebeldom, and while he is, from the grudging admissions of the rebel press, undoubtedly now in possession of Macon, his cavalry have swept on, capturing Milledgeville and other important points, and are by this time thundering at the gates of Augusta. He has scattered the militia of Gen. HOWEL COBB and Gen. GUSTAVUS SMITH to the winds; has captured the State Legislature, or such portion as did not skedaddle, and has captured and destroyed an immense amount of Confederate property; the very life-blood of the rebellion.
The Richmond papers of the 22d are barren of news,
