Germany plans to turn public buildings into bomb shelters

Authorities in Germany are drawing up plans to use metro stations as air raid shelters in response to the growing risk of war with Russia.

The Federal Office for Civil Protection is looking at public buildings that could be converted into bunkers and plans to develop an app to help the public find shelters, Bild newspaper reported.

The German public would also be encouraged to set up shelters at home, such as in basements. Germany has been scaling back its public bunker network since 2007, when the authorities decided they were no longer necessary.

But Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Moscow’s hybrid war campaign on Europe and Putin’s threats to attack countries giving armed support to Kyiv have forced a rethink.

There are currently only 579 public shelters in Germany – which has a population of 84.4 million – and they only have enough space for around half a million people.

Why is the left pushing so hard for WWIII?

Its about time, the end of the concept of self defense via Civil Defense, seemed to come from liberals and liberalism.

Ever since it was known that our enemies could attack us with nukes, protection of our population should have been a consistent and constant part of national activity, and that goes for our allies.

I wonder how well the App will work once the nukes start flying...

What does the public get—five minutes warning in Berlin?

You can’t make up this stuff.

1) I do not expect Putin to push to the West at all. I think that is a Neocon fantasy.
2) If Putin does push to the West, I think Poland will make a strong stand. The Poles are tough.
3) If Putin makes it to Germany, I think Germany will fall faster than France in 1940. The Germans are pussies now.

I built my house in 1993. I thought long and hard about a Cold War bomb shelter and would have done it but the Cold War had just ended. Silly me.

I sure do. I’ve been looking for one the last few weeks. You can never find one now that they’re going to be needed.

What world war??

Ukraine isn’t in nato!!

And why do too many here want war?!?!

I haven’t ever been sickened by opposing views on here in 25 years.

But the “aid ukraine at all costs” camp here comes very close.

Because they must be neocons.

Russia? Really? They can’t even take half of ukraine in a years long war.

They’re going to march across Europe??

Insanity

Reminds me of that airplane scene from Fight Club where Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden is explaining to Edward Norton's Tyler Durden that they put oxygen masks on planes because oxygen "Gets you high."

The argument from the left back then was by dropping any civil defense activity we were lowering the possibility of nuclear war because we are now very vulnerable. Our very vulnerability made use more unthinkable. I remember saying to leftist hippie so then “by being more unsafe we are then safer’? He/She nodded stupidly and thought they won the argument.

Herding everyone into basements will just make it easier for the search and rescue (if there are any) to find the bodies

My understanding is they started to build all buildings that way after WW2. Every town a fortress. In every building a bunker.

In March, ‘22 Putin agreed to and was in the process of leaving ALL Uke territory in the four oblasts in question here. The last thing Putin wants to deal with is a bankrupt country full of actual Ukrainians who despise him. He’ll leave rump western Ukraine for NATO to deal with. NATO broke it, let NATO fix it.

Russia doesn't want the Ukraine. They just want the Donbas region back, which has been historically part of Russia since the tsarist times.
