Salah Penalty Keeps Reds Top of the UCL League Phase Table

Liverpool kept their 100% winning start to the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League intact thanks to Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty. Relive the match and do your own analysis of the data on our Girona vs Liverpool stats page.

Liverpool made it six wins from six in the UEFA Champions League this season thanks to Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty.

Salah’s goal means that Liverpool boss Arne Slot has now guided his new side to 19 wins across his opening 22 games in charge – four more than any other Premier League club across all competitions in 2024-25.

An entertaining first half failed to produce a goal despite 17 shots between the two sides.

Bryan Gil, on loan at Girona from Tottenham, was arguably the biggest culprit for missing chances in the first half. The 23-year-old was put through clean on goal but slipped at the vital moment, before sending a weak shot into the arms of Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

The Brazilian, who was making his first start in over two months after returning from injury, later made a smart save from a long range Yáser Asprilla effort to keep the game goalless going into the break.

Liverpool were given the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, after Donny van de Beek was deemed to have fouled Luis Díaz following a VAR check. Salah didn’t pass up the chance, scoring his 16th goal of 2024-25 from the resulting penalty.

The rest of the match passed with little incident, as Liverpool held on to secure their sixth win in six Champions League matches this season – the only team with a 100% record in the league phase.
