God of War Laufey has officially been announced, featuring a pretty stacked cast, including Jack Quaid, who plays an already controversial cube called Phranque (Frank).
State of Play was filled with exciting announcements, from a spooky Until Dawn 2, a deeper dive into Wolverine, Tomb Raider, and, of course, the most talked-about reveal: God of War Laufey.
However, despite backlash from fans and the creator himself, one character has caught the attention of fans, a jellified blue cube voiced by none other than The Boys star Jack Quaid.
Despite this wacky character and iconic actor bringing them to life, fans just can’t figure out if they love or hate them.
During the trailer, we caught a glimpse at what Sony calls “a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition. He will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen.” Naturally, fans quickly took to social media to share their love and confusion for the unique character.
“God of War is for girls now! And they finally replaced my son with the cube I’ve always wanted…” joked one fan on Bluesky. Others found the cube absolutely adorable, commenting: “Kratos, Atreus, Faye, all literal cube. God of War lore getting unhinged and I’m here for it.”
Others found it hilarious that Jack Quaid was doing mo-cap for Phranque, with various images emerging of Jack surrounded by a plastic cube. To what extent we need motion capture for a cube is yet to be revealed, but some speculate Phranque will turn into something a bit more humanoid later in the game.
“The fact that he did mo-cap for a cube is crazy lol I feel like there’s more to that cube in some sort of mythology lore,” commented one fan. Another joked by adding, “Can’t wait for the behind-the-scenes documentary on the cube’s performance.”
Interestingly, this is the second time Jack Quaid has voiced a character in God of War, after playing Eis in Sons of Sparta.
Whether Phranque will become an iconic character or one fans wish they didn’t have in the game is yet to be seen.
