God of War TV show already recasting Kratos after actor injured on set

Ryan Hurst is set to be recast as Kratos in Amazon’s upcoming God of War TV series, after the actor suffered a serious injury while on set.

As reported by Deadline, Hurst, who had already begun filming as the titular God of War, tore a bicep while performing a stunt in June. The injury is expected to take up to six months to heal, and it would have been unsafe for the actor to return to filming until 2027.

Sources close to the project told Deadline that the shooting schedule wouldn’t allow for such a long break in production, so the decision was made to recast the main role and carry on with a new Kratos.

Four episodes out of the first two seasons, which are said to be shot back-to-back, had already been completed when the accident took place. As a result, these will be reshot once the new actor has been chosen, with production expected to resume in October 2026.

Although the first image from the show received some backlash, Ryan Hurst’s casting was a fairly popular one among fans. His performance as Thor in God of War: Ragnarok received plenty of plaudits, while his past roles as Beta in The Walking Dead and Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy were also beloved.

It’s reported that he gained 40 lbs of muscle in preparation for the series, which is set to be the first-ever live-action adaptation of the iconic franchise.

There is no word yet on who will pick up the Blades of Chaos going forward. In the past, fans have campaigned for the likes of Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Travis Fimmel (Vikings), or even Christopher Judge, who voiced the character in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok.

Whoever secures the role will join a stacked cast, including Callum Vinson as Atreus and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
