House of Cards actress Robin Wright was seen taking a break from filming her upcoming thriller series in London on Friday.

The 58-year-old Golden Globe winner appeared almost unrecognizable as she strolled down the street, smoking a cigarette in the heart of the U.K. capital, where she’s both directing and starring in The Girlfriend.

Wright sported a cream cable-knit sweater paired with stylish faded jeans, looking absorbed in a phone conversation as she animatedly chatted while walking along the pavement.

After finishing her cigarette, which she stubbed out on the ground, she slung a backpack over her shoulders and stood near a row of bicycles.

The former wife of Sean Penn seemed to relish the brief downtime, as her new Amazon Prime series, an eagerly anticipated adaptation of Michelle Frances' novel The Girlfriend, continues to draw significant attention.

Joining Wright in the cast are Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon, Sound of Metal), Laurie Davidson (Mary and George), and Waleed Zuaiter (Gangs of London).

The official description of the series states: 'Laura (Wright) wants for nothing. She has a glittering career, a loving husband, Howard (Zuaiter), and, above all, she has Daniel (Davidson), her precious only son. But Laura’s seemingly perfect life is blown apart when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), the girlfriend who changes everything.

'After an uncomfortable first meeting, Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is. While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. She’ll do anything to protect him. As things go from bad to deadly, the question is, is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive? The truth is a matter of perspective.'

In a recent statement, Wright gushed, 'I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast & crew…so excited!'

Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios said, 'The Girlfriend is a suspenseful family drama about the collapse of a mother and son’s bond, shown through relatable themes of love, greed, and power.

'We’re thrilled to work with Imaginarium and Robin Wright in adapting Michelle Frances’ compelling story for our global Prime Video customers.'

Wright is no stranger to directing, as she took the director's chair for several episodes of Netflix's critically acclaimed House of Cards, where she also played a leading role.

Her portrayal in the series not only won her a Golden Globe but also earned her six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.

Outside of House of Cards, Wright has directed episodes of other well-known shows, including Tell Me Lies and Ozark.

On the big screen, she has captivated audiences with unforgettable performances in films like The Princess Bride, Forrest Gump, and Unbreakable.

Currently, Wright is generating early Oscar buzz for her role in Here, which reunites her with Forrest Gump co-star Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis

Here follows the lives of multiple families across different generations, all connected by a single location, as it adapts Richard McGuire’s graphic novel.

The film is set entirely within one home, where the camera remains fixed for its 104-minute runtime, capturing the shifting stories of its inhabitants over the span of a century.

The film has already caused a stir, as it uses new hyperrealistic AI technology in order to digitally de-age and face-swap the actors in real time, instead of through post-production.

The 2025 Best Actress Oscar race is shaping up to be highly competitive, with strong contenders beyond Wright.

Standouts include Danielle Deadwyler for The Piano Lesson, Zendaya for Challengers, and Angelina Jolie for Maria, each generating significant buzz for their compelling performances.

Lady Gaga is also expected to generate buzz with her role in Joker: Folie à Deux, while Demi Moore is in the conversation for The Substance, and Nicole Kidman is gaining attention for her performance in Babygirl
