Hulu is bringing back “Good American Family” for a second season, with the show taking on an anthology format.
The second season will focus on the case of Lorena Bobbitt and her husband John Bobbitt. Series creator and executive producer Katie Robbins will return for Season 2, as will Season 1 star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo, though Pompeo is not expected to star in the second season.
The logline for Season 2 describes it as “A limited series inspired by the ripped-from-the-headlines story of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes, and ignited a gender war.”
This will be the latest modern reexamination of the Bobbitts’ case. Lorena was featured in a 2019 docuseries released by Amazon titled “Lorena” and delved into the years of abuse she endured at the hands of her husband prior to the night when she cut off his penis.
Along with Robbins and Pompeo, Laura Holstein executive produces “Good American Family” under her and Pompeo’s Calamity Jane banner. Andrew Stearn also executive produces. 20th Television is the studio. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Lorena will serve as a consultant on the series.
“Good American Family” represented Pompeo’s first major acting role since she stepped back from “Grey’s Anatomy.” The first season was inspired by the story of Natalia Grace, a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism, who was adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett under the belief she was still a child. Along with Pompeo, the first season starred Mark Duplass, Imogen Faith Reid, Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue and Jenny O’Hara.
Pompeo and Robbins are also currently at work on the Hulu pilot “Chicks,” which was picked up back in June. Pompeo will again star in that pilot alongside Jodie Whittaker, with Robbins writing and executive producing.
Pompeo is repped by CAA, Linden Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson. Robbins is repped by UTA, Aaron Kogan Management, and Lichter Grossman.
