Grandmother found dead with suspicious head wound on couch of NYC apartment

A grandmother was found dead with a suspicious head wound on a couch in her Brooklyn apartment this week after her concerned son called the cops to check on her, authorities and sources said. 

The unidentified 59-year-old woman was discovered face-down on the sofa around 9:30 a.m. inside the apartment on 79th Street near Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, according to cops and law enforcement sources.

Members of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit made the grisly discovery after the woman’s son called for a wellness check, the sources said. 

The woman – who neighbors say had two sons and two granddaughters – was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS workers, police said. 

Foul play is suspected in her death, according to the sources.

Several hours after the body was discovered, the woman’s husband was taken into custody about two miles away at 52nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Sunset Park, where the victim’s son had tracked him, the sources said. 

Multiple specialized cops responded to pull him from his car, where he had barricaded himself, the sources said. 

It had not been determined by Tuesday what – if any – role he played in his wife’s death, the sources said. 

Neighbors were stunned to hear about the suspicious death.

“They live in front of me and I didn’t know anything at all. I never heard any commotion coming from over there, only the dog,” said Sou Heir, 56, who said it’s not unusual to hear the couple’s pooch barking. “Nobody knows what happened except the dog.”

“He was good. She was good also,” Heir added. “They looked like they were in love…..but nobody knows what happens behind the doors.”

“I feel they were good neighbors, I don’t know what happened. We are sad.”

Neighbor Laura Colatraella, a retired attorney, said she last saw the woman Friday or Saturday night walking her golden labradoodle, a gift from her son. 

She last saw the man earlier last week, looking for a delivery package when he came home from work. 

“I never saw any problems with them. I never saw them fighting, you know, any dispute,”  Colatraella said.  

Colatraella described the victim as a hard-working home health care worker who often worked six or seven days in a row, including some overnight shifts.

“She had a really sweet personality – very, very kind, very sweet, nice and friendly to everyone,” the retiree said. “It was very easy to talk to her, we talked a lot.”

“I just feel really bad,” she added.
