Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick says discs “don’t really make sense” for consumers and Grand Theft Auto 6’s pre-orders are “exceptional.”
Back on June 25, Rockstar Games and Take-Two finally answered the question that Grand Theft Auto fans had been asking about GTA 6 – what is it going to cost?
GTA 6 will have a base price of $79.99, with the ultimate edition costing $99.99. However, there has been plenty of backlash over the decision to offer a ‘physical edition’ of the game that won’t actually come with a disc. Instead, players will receive a GTA-6 branded box with a digital download code instead.
Some stores have said that they won’t carry GTA 6 unless Rockstar offers a disc. Yet, Sony are also ditching physical copies and will stop releasing new PlayStation games on discs from 2028.
GTA 6 boss talks about physical discs amid backlash
It was a topic that came up during Take-Two’s earnings call on August 7, with Strauss Zelnick saying it’s “where the world is going” now.
“In terms of our decision, our business is well over 90% digital. If it’s a big game, discs don’t really make sense for a consumer,” the Take-Two boss said. “Most instances, you have to register online. That is where the world is going.”
While he wouldn’t get into specifics on GTA 6’s pre-order number, he did say they have been “unprecedented” for the industry as a whole.
Rockstar Games“Our pre-orders are exceptional; no one has ever seen anything like this before at Take-Two or the industry. To be clear, we haven’t sold one unit. You can cancel a pre-order. We are realistic and cautiously optimistic,” Zelnick continued.
He also said that Rockstar’s partnership with Netflix for the extended look at GTA 6 on August 27 is the “first of it’s kind” but wouldn’t delve into any details about run-time or what is being shown off.
In what’s become a running theme for investor calls, the Take-Two boss was also quizzed on the price of the highly-anticipated title. “Given the hype around this title, we could have made a number of other pricing choices,” he admitted.
“To say that we expect that GTA 6 will be an incredible bargain is a gross understatement. We’re 13 years after GTA Online was launched, and we have record-setting engagement.”
