Guinea U20, the West African country’s under-20 national football team, beat Liberia 1-0 in Bamako, Mali, on Sunday 18 October 2026. The win put Guinea into the semifinals of the UFOA-A U20 tournament and left the team one victory away from a place at the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
For American readers, the stakes reach beyond West Africa. The top four teams in Ghana will represent Africa at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, the tournament where Morocco knocked the United States out in 2025 on its way to the title.
How Guinea U20 Beat Liberia
Thierno Diallo scored the only goal around the half-hour mark at the Ouezzin Coulibaly stadium in Bamako, the Guinean outlets Guineematin and Africaguinee reported. Guineematin timed the goal in the 30th minute and described Diallo as a defender who had pushed forward, while Africaguinee put it in the 29th minute and named him as Guinea’s number 4.
Liberia pressed for an equaliser after the break, according to Guineematin, but the score did not change. The result gave the team of coach Mohamed Lamine Sylla, known as Leandro, two wins from two games without conceding a goal.
Guinea had opened the tournament on Thursday 15 October with a 1-0 win over the hosts at the Stade Mamadou Konaté, a result the Malian site Kibaru Sports also reported. Mohamed Abédi Bangoura scored shortly before half-time, according to Guineematin and Guinee360.
The squad of 24 players, three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and six forwards, was named by Sylla on 12 October, the Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT) said. The team had prepared at a camp in Khoria, in Guinea, where it beat the Conakry club Horoya AC 2-1 in a warm-up match.

What the UFOA-A Tournament Is
UFOA is the French acronym for the West African Football Union, known in English as WAFU, a regional body of national federations within the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Its Zone A covers the western part of the region: Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
CAF, the governing body of African football, runs the U20 Africa Cup of Nations, and the West African places at that championship are decided in zonal events like this one. The draw for the Bamako edition took place on 1 October at the Radisson Collection hotel in the Malian capital, and Mali is hosting the matches from 15 to 30 October.
Eight teams were drawn into two groups of four: Mali, Guinea, Liberia and Gambia in Group A, and Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau in Group B. Guinea-Bissau later withdrew and the organisers reduced Group B to three teams, while Cape Verde was not in the draw.
The top two in each group reach the semifinals on Sunday 25 October, where the Group A winner meets the Group B runner-up and the Group B winner meets the Group A runner-up. The final and the third-place match are scheduled for Friday 30 October at the Stade Mamadou Konaté, according to the schedule published by the Senegalese sports sites Wiwsport and Senegal7.
Senegal are the defending champions after winning the 2024 edition in Sierra Leone. They began their title defence with a 2-1 win over Mauritania on Friday 16 October, the Mauritanian outlet Madar reported.
What the Tournament Qualifies For
Only the two finalists go through to the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which CAF has awarded to Ghana and which it says will feature 12 teams. CAF said in April that the top four teams in Ghana will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
FIFA’s Council picked Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan on 2 October 2025 to co-host that World Cup in 2027, the Azerbaijani football federation announced. For Guinea, winning the semifinal in Bamako is therefore the first step on the only road to that tournament.
Where the Group Stands
Guinea lead Group A with six points from two games, ahead of Gambia on four, Liberia on one and Mali on none. Gambia beat Mali 1-0 on Sunday evening and knocked the hosts out, the Senegalese site Seneweb reported.
Guinea play Gambia, the Young Scorpions coached by Abdoulie Bojang, on Wednesday 21 October in their last group game. A draw or a win keeps Guinea top, while a Gambian win would lift Gambia above them and drop Guinea to second.
First place would mean a 4 p.m. GMT semifinal against the Group B runner-up, which is noon in New York. Second place would mean a 7 p.m. GMT semifinal, 3 p.m. on the US East Coast, against the winner of a group that Senegal led after the first round of games.
What It Means for US Readers
The clearest link is the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where US youth teams face the African qualifiers. At the 2025 edition in Chile, the US under-20 team lost 3-1 to Morocco in the quarterfinals in Rancagua on 12 October, and Morocco went on to beat Argentina 2-0 in the final in Santiago.
That made Morocco only the second African winner of the tournament, after Ghana in 2009. Any West African team that comes through Bamako and then Ghana could meet the United States in Azerbaijan or Uzbekistan in 2027 if the Americans qualify.
Travel is the other practical point for Americans. The US State Department keeps Mali at Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, citing crime, terrorism, unrest, health and kidnapping, and says US government staff in the country may not travel outside Bamako.
What Is Not Known
Guinea’s semifinal opponent will not be known until Group B is finished, and the published schedule does not name a semifinal venue. Guinea’s first two games were played at two different grounds in Bamako, the Stade Mamadou Konaté and the Ouezzin Coulibaly stadium.
CAF said in August that the Ghana tournament would be staged in February and March 2027, while Wiwsport and Senegal7 have since published dates of 27 April to 18 May 2027. CAF has not published exact match dates on its own site, and it is not clear whether any US broadcaster or streaming service will carry the matches from Bamako.
