Two sides in the middle of terrible domestic runs meet in Europe this week. Look ahead to the game with our Hoffenheim vs Tottenham prediction and preview.

Hoffenheim vs Tottenham Stats: The Key Insights

  • Tottenham were victorious in 53.8% of the Opta supercomputer’s pre-match simulations.
  • Spurs are winless in their last three Europa League games (D2 L1), last having a longer winless run in major European competition between February and October 2018 in the Champions League (five).
  • Between them, these sides have won just two of their last 17 league matches.

Two sides in woeful domestic form meet in Germany this weekend, with both desperately seeking a positive result to lift the gloom surrounding their clubs.

Tottenham’s dismal 3-2 loss to Everton last weekend heaped further pressure on Ange Postecoglou. Spurs have now won just one of their last 10 Premier League matches – and that solitary victory came against bottom-of-the-table Southampton.

The defeat to Everton was Tottenham’s 12th in the league this season, making it only the sixth time in their history they’ve suffered as many as 12 defeats in their first 22 league games. The last time Spurs endured such a poor start was during the 1997-98 campaign (also 12 losses).

Postecoglou’s side are 15th in their domestic table, and while conversation about them being in a relegation battle is mostly made in jest, they did get relegated in eight of the Opta supercomputer’s latest 10,000 relegation simulations.

Their domestic struggles have spilled into Europe, too, particularly towards the end of 2024. Spurs are ninth in the Europa League standings, one place off the automatic qualification spots, and have failed to win any of their last three matches in the competition (D2 L1). Tottenham’s last longer winless streak in major European competition came in the Champions League between February and October 2018 (5 games).

Hosts Hoffenheim are similarly in the middle of a horrible run of form that has seen them dragged into a relegation scrap. A 3-1 away win in a six-pointer at Holsten Kiel at the weekend was their first win in nine matches, and moved them out of the relegation places, but they still hover just three points from safety.

Andrej Kramaric scored in that crucial victory, but his post-match comments after their 5-0 humiliation against Bayern Munich the game prior shed light on the turmoil within the club. In a fiery rant, Kramaric used colourful language to criticise the club’s hierarchy, claiming he was holding back as the truth would lead to “the biggest punishment in Bundesliga history.”

In the Europa League, Hoffenheim currently sit 26th, two spots shy of the qualification places for the last-16 play-off round. They remain unbeaten at home in the competition (W1 D2) but have taken just one point from three away games (D1 L2). A win against Tottenham is vital before their trip to Anderlecht in their final league phase game.

Hoffenheim will be without new signing Gift Orban, who is not registered for their Europa League squad. Additionally, manager Christian Ilzer has a host of other absentees, including Ozan Kabak, Florian Grillitsch, Grischa Prömel, Ihlas Bebou and Marius Bülter.

Antonin Kinsky is not registered to play for Spurs, and with Guglielmo Vicario still out with a broken ankle, Fraser Forster is likely to be recalled for the visitors in goal.

Dominic SolankeBrennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma all missed the game against Everton and Postecoglou might not want to rush them back. Ben Davies played for the first time in over a month to provide some much-needed defensive cover and will be needed again here with with Micky van den Ven out injured, though Cristian Romero did return to training on Wednesday. Rodrigo Bentancur was also involved in training and could provide a boost if he is available to play.

Hoffenheim vs Tottenham Head-to-Head

Hoffenheim have lost all four of their encounters with English sides in all competitions. This includes two defeats to Liverpool in the qualifying stages of the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League and two more to Manchester City during the group stage of the following season’s competition.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have managed just one win in their last six meetings with German opposition across all competitions (D1 L4). That solitary victory came in their most recent clash, a 3-2 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt in October 2022.
