A 62-year-old man has died after smoke was seen coming out of his Hong Kong flat.

Police said they received a report of smoke at around 7.20am on Friday at the flat in Kai Yin House at Kai Yip Estate, a public housing in Kowloon Bay.

Firefighters and police officers found the man unconscious when they arrived at the scene.

A government spokesman said food was being cooked in the kitchen when the smoke was spotted.

The man was sent to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where he was declared dead afterwards.

Last month, a 65-year-old man died and his 31-year-old daughter was injured after a fire broke out in his flat in Chai Wan, with investigations finding that a short circuit in a mobile phone charger had caused the blaze.
