Heavily-armed police officers were deployed to guard a cash delivery van after the vehicle collided head-on with a taxi on a Kwai Chung flyover in Hong Kong on Monday, leaving one cab passenger injured.

A source familiar with the matter said the taxi was travelling against traffic on the Kwai Chung Road flyover near Princess Margaret Hospital when the crash occurred around 3am.

Photos posted online showed the taxi sustained extensive damage in the front, with its bonnet badly crushed.

First responders from the force’s emergency unit, wearing bulletproof vests and helmets and carrying shotguns, were seen guarding the cash delivery van on the flyover.

A male passenger from the taxi complained of chest pain and was conscious while being taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment, a police spokeswoman said.

According to the force, the two drivers were uninjured in the incident.
