At least four dogs in a rural area in Hong Kong have died from suspected poisoning, prompting a police investigation.

Police received a report around 8am on Friday from a pet owner on Kwu Tung South Road in Sheung Shui who said two of his dogs had gone missing and four others were dead in suspected poisoning cases.

The dogs’ mouths were open when they were found dead.

Officers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals attended the scene.

A police criminal investigation team is looking into the case.

Last year, at least 51 dogs were either injured or killed after ingesting or coming into contact with suspected poison on the streets, according to animal protection groups.
