Hong Kong’s largest electricity provider is investigating a voltage dip in the eastern New Territories that inadvertently triggered fire alarms and left residents trapped in lifts on Monday morning.
CLP Power confirmed that its 132,000-volt power grid connecting Ma On Shan to Sha Tin experienced a voltage dip for 0.1 seconds at around 7.21am, causing lights to flicker or dim.
Some electrical devices sensitive to voltage changes could also have gone into emergency mode and stopped working, the company said. It added that technicians were in the process of investigating the incident.
The Fire Services Department said it recorded 19 cases of people left trapped in lifts and two cases of fire alarms being triggered between 7.21am and 7.55am.
The department said that areas affected by the voltage dip included Siu Lek Yuen, Tin Sum, Sha Tin, Ma On Shan and Tai Po.
CLP Power supplies electricity to Kowloon, the New Territories and most of Hong Kong’s outlying islands.
