Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park will start running trial matches at its 50,000-seat main stadium in January as authorities step up drills at smaller facilities within the venue, including doubling the expected number of spectators.
An international rugby match between Hong Kong, China and Brazil would be held at the 5,000-seat outdoor Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground on Saturday, with authorities expecting 3,000 people to attend the ticketed match.
“We will progressively increase the intensity and scale of the trial runs, increasing the number of participants each time,” George Tsoi Kin-pan, commissioner for sports, said.
Tsoi also said that authorities would hold multiple trial runs in December, including a basketball match, and expand test runs at an indoor venue in the park.
In January, test runs would be held for the 50,000-seat stadium, the showpiece facility at the park featuring a retractable rooftop, Tsoi added without revealing the events that would be held.
Concerns have been raised over the soon-to-be-opened Kai Tak Sports Park’s readiness to handle and disperse large crowds, with ongoing construction still surrounding the area.
