Hongkongers made nearly 1.8 million trips out of the city in the five-day period around Lunar New Year, an 8.6 per cent increase compared with the same break in 2024, government figures show.
Meanwhile, mainland Chinese authorities reported a record number of vehicles had used the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. More than 25,000 vehicles passed through the Zhuhai checkpoint on Saturday for the first time.
The peak period for Hongkongers returning to the city after holidaying elsewhere was expected to be on Sunday afternoon. As of 4pm, the Immigration Department had recorded 342,780 arrivals and 245,524 departures. Among the arrivals, 184,862 were Hong Kong residents.
From Lunar New Year’s Eve last Tuesday to Saturday, Hong Kong residents made 1,798,855 trips out of the city, department data showed. The figure marked an increase of 133,957, or 8.6 per cent, compared with the 1,655,898 trips made during the same Lunar New Year period in 2024.
The number of mainland residents visiting the city this year increased by 2.7 per cent, rising to 741,425 from 721,791 in 2024. The number of visitors from other jurisdictions rose by 18.8 per cent to 140,352 from 118,112.
Mainland authorities said the number of vehicles passing through the Zhuhai border checkpoint of the 55km mega bridge surpassed 25,000 for the first time on Saturday, reportedly setting a record for traffic flow.
