Horrifying footage captured inside a school shows the moment a 13-year-old was senselessly beaten.

The incident unfolded in class at Potter John High School on Monday, with the video being shared online.

In it, another boy, also aged 13, can be seen standing over the teenager and after a few seconds punches are hurled at the youngster.

The victim's mother spoke with NBC 7 after the footage was circulated online. Sara Strange said: 'It was very hard to watch. It's still hard to watch. That's my baby.

'Watching somebody just beat him in the head like that. He was totally blindsided.'

According to Strange, her son's neck and head hurt from the brutal attack. His hand is also swollen, with the family waiting on x-rays to find out if its broken.

Strange added that the teen is now traumatized from the incident, and that is being kept away from school.

The Fallbrook Union Elementary School District said that the attack happened after some hard feelings over the weekend.

According to a statement, a group of friends had been playing the 'body shot game', which is a trend which encourages people to hit someone else in the stomach.

The stomach hit is recorded and posted online, as part of an ongoing social media trend.

A statement said: 'FUESD does not condone violence in any form and will not tolerate activities that promote or encourage harm to others.'

Dr. Alex Gonzales, the principal of the school, said in a letter to parents that any violent act leads to suspension under California code.

According to a statement from the district, staff at the school took immediate action against the other teenager.

Strange added: 'We should all be able to send our kids to school and feel that they're safe.'
