I am back home after a couple of weeks away with my family. My kids were on spring break and I was doing the show from the Bahamas last week, which was quite nice.

I know that people say that if you are going on vacation with your children, it is not a vacation but a trip. I am happy to report that my kids are now officially at the stage where that is no longer true. They are very, very worthy vacation buddies.

Now, I will admit that it took some time to get here. When all three of them were in the single digits, I understood that saying very well. But they are 15, 13, and 11 years old now, and we have crossed over into true vacation mode.

There was one thing in particular that happened at the tail end of this trip that was mildly amusing and has had us cracking up for a few days now, so I thought I would share it with you guys.

The Plot

We were flying home from the Bahamas this weekend, and I was with my family going through security to get on the jet bridge. I went first and something happened right behind me that somehow delayed them. I didn’t realize this when I gave my boarding pass to the gate agent and she waved me through.

I started walking down the jet bridge, and, when I looked behind me, I realized another group had gotten in front of Doug and the kids. These people had like a bunch of bags and stuff, so I initially thought I wanted to get on the plane in front of them to make sure I got prime bin space overhead. I kept going until I realized it was one of those airports where the jet bridge has a right angle.

At that point, I realized this set up was begging for me to play a little prank on my family and I was going to have to cede the overhead bin space. I decided I would use the corner to hide and scare Doug and the kids because we enjoy doing this to each other.

They scare me all the time. When we were at the swimming pool down there, I was minding my own business and reading my book. They were all swimming together, but they got out and managed to sneak up behind me – I didn’t even see it – and spook me with a big scream. I dropped my book. I was so scared.

It is all in good fun. You know, you hate it in the moment, but then you laugh about it because you seem like an idiot.

The Fail

Anyway, I decided I was going to get my revenge. I obviously knew there was a family behind me, but I thought they were the group after that. So, I got in the corner and I could hear the footsteps approaching. When they got closer, I jumped out and yelled “Boo!” with my arms out.

The only problem? It wasn’t them. Instead, it was some 40-year-old man, who was very startled. He and I were just staring at each other wondering why I had just done this to him. Eventually, he started laughing, and then I started laughing, and we both wound up doubled over laughing.

I don’t know if he recognized me, but he was clearly wondering why the crazy lady was trying to terrify him as he boarded the Delta flight. The cherry on top was my family had the extra bonus of having seen it all happen because they were behind him and watched exactly what I tried to do so terribly and inartfully.

The Lasting Laughs

Needless to say, we laughed about it for the rest of the flight. As it turned out, that guy was seated directly in front of me on the plane. It was all I could do not to keep scaring him. I was dying to do it, but it would have been bordering on obnoxious at that point.

Sir, if you’re out there, thank you for being such a good sport and for giving me something that has kept me laughing for a solid two days now.
