How stars like Jenna Ortega and Miley Cyrus drastically changed their appearance with controversial beauty trend

On Tuesday, actress Jenna Ortega shocked fans as she debuted a brand new look of bleached eyebrows to the State of the Industry and Lionsgate presentation as part of CinemaCon to promote her new movie, Hurry Up Tomorrow - and it's a trend that is taking over Hollywood.

The brown-haired beauty usually sports dark eyebrows that compliment her eyes, but she decided to change things up as she sported light brown bleached brows on the carpet.

Ortega paired her new eyebrows with a chic purple Versace shirt with her stylish ensemble, which retails for $1,073 and added inches to her frame with purple satin platform heels.

And, while fashion bible Vogue even went as far as saying her dramatical facial change made her 'unrecognizable,' it's actually a trend that has been happening in Tinsel Town for the past few years, and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

So what are these stars doing to their eyebrows?

At this year's 97th Academy Awards, Miley Cyrus took a stab at the trend, as she arrived with totally bleached brows - so bleached, in fact, that you could barely see them.

She paired her red carpet look with a sleeveless, floor-length custom gown by Alexander McQueen, and wore her hair in a dramatic side part.

However, fans weren't so pleased with the change, as many of them couldn't believe their eyes.

'Bleached eyebrows ain't for everyone. Looking at you Miley,' posted a second, while a third commented: 'I can't believe someone on Miley Cyrus team saw her eyebrows and was like yeah that's it looks great.'

Another person mocked: 'Can someone tell me where the hell Miley Cyrus eyebrows are tonight? Because I guess they didn't want to make an appearance tonight on the Oscars.'

But Cyrus and Ortega aren't the only ones who have sported the bleached look in recent months.

Many A-list celebrities have taken a stab at the bold style, including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kylie Kenner, Kim Kardashian and Lisa Rinna.

Model Amelia Gray Hamlin has been rocking the bleached brows for months now, too, as well as Nicola Peltz Beckham.

So forget the days of Brooke Shields' fluffy, bushy brows - it's all about the bleach.

But if you want to hop in on the trend, it may seem overwhelming to know where to start - after all, what can happen to your brows, and what can it do for your face?

According to celebrity makeup artist T. Cooper of Major Face, eyebrows 'play a huge role in framing the face.'

'When you lighten them or make them appear nearly invisible, you're softening that structure, which can completely transform your features,' Cooper explained exclusively to DailyMail.com.

'Bleached brows can create an edgy, high-fashion look, make the eyes stand out more, or even give a more futuristic or androgynous vibe,' she continued.

'The effect can vary depending on how light you go — Jenna Ortega's brows are softened but still visible, you can tell she still has hair present. Whereas a fully bleached brow is nearly invisible, it often looks like there's no brow hair at all,' the expert shared.

Cooper also noted that Ortega may have had to go through multiple rounds of bleach to get the desired effect, as her natural brows are quite dark.

'The goal is to lift the brows evenly without over-processing them, which can lead to breakage or an uneven tone,' she explained.

And according to Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Maryam Safaee, MD, FAAD, bleaching can be safe as long as you use the right products.

She noted that there are a few important things beauty fanatics should keep in mind, including the fact that the hair on your eyebrows is much more delicate than scalp hair.

'Bleaching of the eyebrows can cause damage and breakage and eventual thinning of the eyebrows,' Dr. Safaee told DailyMail.com exclusively.

The dermatologist also recommended doing something called a 'patch test' before you go all-out with the dyed brows

Kim Kardashian has even dipped her toes into the trend over the years

'If you decide to bleach your brows follow up with a nourishing brow serum containing peptides or castor oil to keep hairs healthy and strong,' she shared.

'Bleaching naturally dark brown eyebrows requires the right products and careful technique to lift the pigment safely — especially since the brow area is super delicate.'

The dermatologist also recommended doing something called a 'patch test' before you go all-out with the dyed brows.

A patch test simply means applying a small amount of the product on a small area of the skin to make sure you don't have any allergies.

When you apply the bleach, she also recommended applying a barrier cream like Vaseline around the area to protect the skin.

'To maintain brow health, use a hydrating brow serum regularly and avoid harsh skincare around the area for one to two days after bleaching,' Dr. Safaee advised, recommending that you bleach the hair again every four to six weeks if you want to maintain the look.

'Bleached brows are a bold trend that's here to stay, offering a blank canvas for experimenting with hair colors and makeup looks,' she said.

'It's a temporary yet dramatic way to transform your appearance — just be sure to follow the proper steps to achieve the best (and safest) results.'
