A huge fire has broken out at Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi on Friday afternoon.

A large plume of black smoke was seen above Ferrari world and Yas Marina Circut at about 2pm local time.

Emergency services swiftly responded to the fire.

Abu Dhabi Police blocked off the routes leading to and from the theme park area, redirecting traffic on Yas Bay to ensure emergency responders could access the site.

Writing on social media, Abu Dhabi Police said they responded to a fire on Yas Island.

They said: "Teams from Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Civil Defence have attended a fire that broke out on a construction site this afternoon on Yas Island.”

"Abu Dhabi Police has advised to obtain updates from official sources only."

It has been reported that the fire broke out in an under-construction visitor attraction.

In December, Miral, the developer of the theme park, revealed plans for a 16,900-square-metre expansion to the attraction.

The expansion will feature 18 new rides and attractions, along with an additional 3.3km of slides.

The waterpark will boast the UAE’s tallest slide and will introduce the GCC's first waterpark ride integrated within a waterslide complex.
