The husband of a missing Sacramento nurse has been arrested on murder charges after allegedly fabricating a story that federal immigration authorities had taken her into custody, authorities said.
Jasmine Gill, 30, was reported missing by her cousin on Oct. 4 after she was last seen at her home on Sept. 30. Her husband, Gurinder Gill, initially told police that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had taken Jasmine into custody while she was checking the mail at their residence.
However, investigators quickly cast doubt on his account.
“As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance,” the department said in a statement last week.
Detectives subsequently uncovered that the couple was involved in an ongoing divorce and child custody battle.
The investigation took a grim turn following the discovery of burned human remains in neighboring El Dorado County on Oct. 1, which authorities later confirmed belonged to Jasmine.
Following the discovery, homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder Gill on murder charges. He was arrested on Oct. 14 and is currently being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail.
According to her family, Jasmine followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a registered nurse and was trying to get a fresh start for herself and her 8-month-old son.
Her family and supporters have launched a GoFundMe campaign to return her remains to India, support her infant son, and assist with legal costs.
“Jasmine lost her father at a young age. Jasmine’s mother, a single mother, worked full-time as a nurse in India while raising Jasmine and her brother, making countless sacrifices to give her children a better future,” the family said in a statement.
The family added that she was trying to find freedom for herself and her baby but “before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect.”
“We cannot bring Jasmine back. We cannot restore the future she deserved or take away her family’s grief,” the statement read.
