A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot a man in New York City yesterday while his five-year-old watched from the car, prompting criticism from city and state leaders, and calls for the release of body-camera footage.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, confirmed that an officer had fired a weapon during what it described as a "targeted operation" to arrest a man in the Bronx, who had been identified as an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record.

The man, who officials have not publicly named, survived the shooting and was taken to a local hospital, according to DHS.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident, describing it as an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation”.

He said preliminary reports suggested officers had surrounded the man and a five-year-old child inside his car before firing several rounds.

Mayor Mamdani added that the child was believed to have escaped any kind of physical injury from the confrontation.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also criticised the shooting, and said in a statement that she had spoken to President Donald Trump and conveyed her “outrage on behalf of New Yorkers”.

Ms Hochul said she had asked the president to ensure that any body-camera footage of the incident was made public, arguing its release would help establish what happened.

Trump is yet to comment publicly on the shooting as of this morning.

In its account of the incident, DHS said the man was from the Dominican Republic and had a previous conviction for grand larceny - a felony crime involving the unlawful theft of property or money, commonly referred to as grand theft.

The department also cited earlier arrests involving allegations of assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession.

According to DHS, New York police arrested the man in December 2023, but released him several days later.

The department further alleged the man had links to the Trinitarios, a transnational criminal group as described by the US Justice Department.

The details were provided by DHS, and officials have not publicly identified the man or released further information about the circumstances leading to the shooting.

The incident has renewed tensions over federal immigration enforcement in New York, a Democratic stronghold where local authorities restrict police cooperation with federal immigration operations.

Mayor Mamdani said he intended to ask President Trump to end ICE enforcement actions in the city.

“I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities,” the mayor wrote on X yesterday evening.

His comments came as protesters gathered near the scene of the shooting, chanting “we want justice” and “ICE off our streets now”, to express their anger over the use of force during the operation.

In January, an ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis resulted in the death of Renee Good, drawing national attention to the conduct of federal immigration agents.

Further details about yesterday's shooting, including the sequence of events and the circumstances in which the officer fired, have yet to be established publicly.
