Federal authorities have begun summoning Haitian migrants who recently lost their legal protections to immigration offices and placing some of them in ankle monitors to track their whereabouts.
The latest move comes after roughly 350,000 Haitian migrants lost their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) when the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate the protections. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has since begun calling in the Haitians for check-ins with ICE officers, who are placing the ankle monitors on them, according to The Washington Post.
TPS had allowed many of the Haitian migrants to legally live and work in the United States for more than a decade while shielding them from deportation.
Now, the Trump administration has instructed federal immigration agents to begin prioritizing Haitians for arrest and deportation.
Many of the Haitian nationals who lost their protections have yet to appear before immigration judges or receive formal deportation orders. Some of those summoned have been enrolled in ICE’s Alternatives to Detention program, which uses tools including GPS ankle monitors to track migrants and ensure compliance with immigration proceedings.
As of July 11, nearly 54,000 migrants were outfitted with ankle monitors through the Alternatives to Detention program, according to ICE statistics. For comparison, roughly 30,000 migrants were wearing ICE ankle monitors in September 2025 and 17,000 in September 2024.
Activists said an estimated 50 to 60 Haitians living in Springfield, Ohio, a hub for the migrant population, have already received orders to report for their check-ins, according to the Springfield News-Sun.
During the 2024 campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump cited unconfirmed reports that Haitian migrants living in Springfield were eating residents’ pets and pledged to “absolutely” revoke their TPS if he returned to the White House.
DHS didn’t confirm whether the agency is targeting Haitians with ankle monitors, but criticized TPS as a “de facto amnesty program.”
“Every day, DHS is conducting law enforcement activities across the country to keep Americans safe. DHS does not discuss ongoing or future operations,” a Homeland Security spokesperson told The Daily Wire.
“Temporary Protected Status is exactly that — temporary. For too long, TPS has been allowed to function as a de facto amnesty program despite Congress never intending it to be permanent,” the spokesperson said.
DHS is now encouraging Haitians to leave the country on their own through the agency’s self-deportation program.
“What we would say now is it’s closing time, which means you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here,” the spokesperson said. “The good news is it’s not too late to get a $2,600 check and a free flight home.”
