These courses will train engineers and technical staff to plan, implement and monitor technical programmes related to Water, Sanitation and Energy, and will help them better understand the organizational context of humanitarian situations. The courses are run jointly by the Water and Habitat Unit of the ICRC and partner universities in the various locations.

Each course consists of 3 phases: a 4–6 week online session to acquire the basics, a 5-6 day face-to-face session to deepen and apply the concepts, and a 2 month assignment period to apply the concepts in a practical case study.

Energy Efficient Borehole Pumping Systems NAIROBI, April / September


NAIROBI 

The course aims at consolidating the participants’ competence in the field of small to medium borehole pumping system. It focuses on a comprehensive design concept that allows to optimisation sustainability and energy consumption, being renewable or not. It covers the full project extent, from assessment, contractor supervision, work commissioning and training operators for operation and maintenance.

Cost: EUR 2500 (1750 course fees + 750 hotel)

Basics of Electricity for Construction Engineers


NAIROBI 

This 5-days course aims to provide participants with the knowledge required to successfully manage electrical design and works in buildings (including power supply options, PV systems, safety measures, commissioning).

Cost: EUR 2500 (1750 course fees + 750 hotel)

Sanitation: Sewerage Networks and Wastewater Treatment Plants


The course aims at providing the required skills to carry out a diagnosis of sanitation systems and wastewater treatment facilities and appraise rehabilitation options.

Cost: EUR 2650 (1750 course fees + 900 hotel)

Basic Cement and Concrete Applications


The course aims at consolidating the participants’ competence in the following fields: 

  • Electricity related to buildings (network and safety protections)
  • Power supply (genset and transformer sizing and renewable energies like solar, wind turbine and hybrid solutions) 
  • Need assessment, proposal development for small and medium scale projects and evaluate contractual tender offers and supervise projects implementation for medium to large scale interventions

Water and Sanitation Engineering in the Humanitarian Context


The training organized twice per year with the support of Bushproof consultancy in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The course on water and sanitation engineering puts an extra focus on emergency applications but is also highly relevant to regular WatHab operations. The training includes theory sessions, exercises and practical applications.
