An illegal immigrant was arrested Wednesday after the body of a mother was found stabbed on a running trail just outside Washington, D.C., officials say.

The suspect, 19-year-old Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, was detained in connection with the murder of 42-year-old Carmen Lizet Puch, who was discovered at Virginia’s Great Falls Park early Monday morning, according to Fairfax County Police. Cedillos-Campos is a Salvadoran illegal alien who had been caught and released while crossing the El Paso, Texas, border in April 2024, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson told the Daily Caller.

A jogger phoned authorities after finding Puch lying in a small gravel parking lot near her car. When officers arrived, they pronounced the Reston local dead at the scene, NBC4 Washington reported.

Puch, a mother to one daughter, was described by those who knew her as soft-spoken and hard-working, according to NBC4.

“Biden and [Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas] hand-delivered alleged killer Cedillos-Campos to the streets of Fairfax County. They recklessly unleashed millions of unvetted illegal aliens into American communities and abused the law to do so,” the spokesperson said. “President Trump and Secretary Mullin are now enforcing the law, arresting illegal aliens who have no right to be in our country—and have reversed Biden’s deadly catch-and-release policy.”

The arrest has drawn additional attention to Fairfax County, which has already faced a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation following a surge in the number of the county’s murder suspects who are illegal immigrants.

The DOJ’s probe, conducted by the department’s Civil Rights Division, aims to determine whether Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s office gave preferential treatment to illegal alien criminal defendants, potentially discriminating against American citizens. Accusations against Descano claim that his policies have led to institutionalized failure, including the release or plea deals for many illegal alien criminals and other violent criminals.

The Daily Caller reported in April that three-quarters of the county’s murder suspects in 2026 were illegal immigrants.

The victims have included a 3-month-old who was allegedly murdered by her illegal immigrant father and a 41-year-old mother who was allegedly stabbed to death at a Fairfax County bus stop by an illegal immigrant.

The administration has spent months calling out the “sanctuary” politics of Virginia and Fairfax, including Descanos and Democrat Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Fairfax County Police Department have not responded to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.
