A woman in India has been arrested after she allegedly duped wealthy men into marriage and then stole cash and jewellery from them.

The police in Rajasthan, a state in north-western India, apprehended the woman following a raid in Uttarakhand, reported Indian news outlet India Today on Dec 22. It was not reported when the arrest was made.

The woman had posed as an ideal partner on dating apps, targeting divorced or rich businessmen and professionals, and finding out more about their finances and businesses after getting to know them.

The woman would then allegedly steal from her husband after marriage, after spending months building up trust within her new family. If she was confronted for her theft, she would file false cases of domestic violence and harassment against them, and extort them for money.

One alleged victim is a reputable jeweller in Jaipur, who connected with the woman on a dating app after his wife died. He married her in February 2023, and she allegedly stole jewellery and money worth Rs 36.5 lakh (S$58,231). She also filed false charges against her husband and his relatives in Dehradun, according to India Today.

The husband filed a police report on July 29, 2023.

Jaipur’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Kumar said the woman had allegedly duped other men in the past, and are interrogating her.
