We’ve officially had our first look at the Modern Warfare 4 Gunsmith, alongside new looks at some of the gameplay. But despite all that, the upcoming Gunny feature has already got fans angry, prompting Infinity Ward to insist it’s not AI.

With Modern Warfare 4 coming out on October 23, 2026, we don’t have long to wait before a new Call of Duty installment hits consoles and PCs (and Switches) across the globe. As such, Infinity Ward has been hyping the adventure up by showcasing various new features.

We’ve had our first look at Kill Block, a view of the gameplay, and a dive into the game’s upcoming attachments and gun leveling system. However, fans have also spotted Gunny, which is an assistant to help you create the best loadout, and they’re not happy, slamming it as essentially “an AI chat bot,” a rumor Infinity Ward quickly shut down.

New Gunny MW4 feature meets major fan backlash

Following a first look at the game’s upcoming gunsmith, fans were quick to point out Gunny, which appears on the right-hand side of the screen and reads “Hello, I can help you build a weapon when you have more attachments unlocked.”

Shortly after, many took to social media to share their frustrations regarding the new feature: “They got an AI chat bot in the game now to help mfs with their loadouts as if it’s not the same sh*t used every year,” joked one player, while another added: “Can’t wait for it to recommend a 6x variable zoom for my M4 so I can maintain distance and still put out significant damage.”

Others lashed out, saying it’s “the epitome of everything wrong with all this s**t f**k this game.”

Following the controversy, Infinity Ward was quick to clear up any frustrations, posting, “Wrong (again.) Gunny is handcrafted by our developers, not AI. It recommends builds based on the attachments you’ve unlocked for each weapon. It helps make quick loadout changes between matches. Give it a shot in the Beta.”

Nevertheless, how players will react to it when the game’s out is yet to be seen, but it’s clear fans aren’t best pleased with the new addition. Though, as explained in the image, “assets and gameplay currently in development,” so these are subject to change. And Infinity Ward have already spoken out regarding the backlash over visual recoil.
