Inside Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter's 'love triangle' with Shawn Mendes - as fans accuse singers of being 'obsessed' with each other

Sabrina Carpenter shot to fame after being embroiled in a love triangle with Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.

But the singer's latest album, Short n' Sweet, has fuelled rumours of yet another romantic feud - this time with Shawn Mendes, and his ex, Camila Cabello.

The Espresso hitmaker, 25 - who kissed Jenna Ortega in the gory music video for her song Taste - was caught up in short-lived speculation with the Stitches singer, 26, earlier last year.

And in an assortment of tracks from her sixth studio album, she appeared to possibly sing lyrics aimed at Shawn and Camilla - although she did not use any names.

Other fans have speculated that the songs Taste, Coincidence and Sharpest Tool, also off the new album, are written about the potential tensions between the trio.

While Camila and Sabrina were once pals - and often publicly supported each others music career - fans believe a feud could have soured things between them.

Elsewhere, people have pinned Camila and Sabrina against one another and claiming that the duo have been 'copying' each other's images since both being linked to Shawn.

Here, FEMAIL looks at the time line of Sabrina and Camila's friendship - and romantic rumours with Shawn...

GOOD FRIENDS

From around 2015 to 2021, both Sabrina and Camila had warm relations with one another and often commented on each other's social media photos. 

Sabrina also appeared to be a big fan of Camila's old band, Fifth Harmony, and has snapped photos with them. 

In 2016, Sabrina and the group both featured on a song together.

Elsewhere, in 2021, the singer said of Camila: 'She's amazing and she's always incredibly kind to me.'

CAMILA AND SHAWN BEGIN DATING 

That same year, Sabrina reportedly also liked a photo Camila shared of her and Shawn kissing on Instagram. 

The ex-power couple had been a long time coming. Shawn and Camila had started dating in 2019, after years of fans speculating a spark between the pair - and a steamy Señorita music video. 

The relationship was filled with several PDA snaps, Instagram captions and heartfelt interviews praising one another. 

In one interview on SiriusXM, Shawn gushed: 'She is completely all in or nothing. And I think that's something that I wasn't at the beginning of our relationship.

'And I think that a lot of people maybe are afraid to be all in, because if you're all in, then you kind of, it hurts it. The blow hurts that much more if it ends, you know?'

'But she really teaches me that if we have one life, and we don't have much time here, it might as well be all in if you're in love with someone and you're there. And I kind of learned that every day.

'She's so absolutely patient with me, especially when I'm stressed or anything is kind of getting to me. She'll text me. And if I ever am kind of just being bite-y with her and she'd be like, 'It's okay. I love you. No matter what I love you, no matter what.'

'And it's like, that's real strength and patience and love. But it's amazing. It's like a movie.'

COUPLE SPLITS 

However after two years, the pair announced their break-up on Instagram.

Taking to their Stories, both penned: 'Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.'

'We started out relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends...

'We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.'

SHAWN LINKED TO SABRINA - AND BACK TO CAMILA

In February 2023, Sabrina and Shawn first sparked dating rumors when they were spotted on a stroll together in LA. 

The following month, the pair were seen together once again as they left Miley Cyrus' album release party. 

But in April 2023, the Mercy singer was spotted kissing Camila while attending the Coachella Music Festival in California. 

Camila earlier this year told the Call Her Daddy podcast: 'I'm kind of impulsive in that way.

'If I feel it, I say it... And I'm not really good at not doing that, the worst place for it to live in is my mind.

'I would rather say it and see what happens and then wake up the next day and find out that it's been heavily documented. I opted for that route. It is what it is. It was a fun time. It was a fun moment.'

She added: 'I will always care about him and love him. He's such a good person. I'm lucky... Some people have exes who are awful, and he is not. He's a really kind, good person.'

In Sabrina's song, Coincidence, Sabrina appeared to hint at their affectionate reunion at the festival. 

'What a surprise, your phone just died/Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs/ Palm Springs looks nice, but who's by your side?/D**n it, she looks kinda like the girl you outgrew,' she sang. 

In the same track, she belted out lyrics regarding a love triangle - and could possibly be another reference to Shawn and Camila. 

At the beginning, she sang, 'The second I put my head on your chest/She knew, she's got a real sixth sense.'

'Now her name comes up once, then it comes up twice/And without her even bein' here, she's back in your life/Now she's in the same d**n city on the same d**n night.'

Meanwhile, some have also suggested that Camila's song June Gloom is about her point of view of her and Shawn's rekindling last year.

'If she's so amazing, why are you on this side of town?' the lyrics question. 'If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?'

Just days after Short n'  Sweet dropped, Camila lip-synched the same lyrics in her TikTok.

In another song off Sabrina's album called, Dumb & Poetic, Sabrina sings about an ex who is into meditation, but is also manipulative. 

'Cherry-pick lines like they're words you invented/Gold star for highbrow manipulation/And 'love everyone' is your favorite quotation,' the lyrics included. 

She could also could be heard singing, 'Try to come off like you're soft and well-spoken/Jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen.'

Both Shawn and Leonard Cohen are from Canada, and Shawn also sang Leonard's song Hallelujah during some of his past shows. 

Shawn has also been open about his journey with meditation and told Vogue back in 2021, 'I had definitely sat down a couple of times and done a meditation on YouTube...'

'But it really wasn't until about two and a half years ago, when I was going through a really tough time and had a lot of anxiety, that I started using it regularly.'

'It took me from a place of fear and anxiety to a place where I realized you can't get anywhere if you don't start with compassion for yourself.' 

Also in the track, she later sings about an ex taking mushrooms: 'Save all your breath for your form meditation/You're so empathetic, you'd make a great wife/And I promise the mushrooms aren't changing your life.' 

Shawn admitted that he has experimented taking mushrooms during a recent London concert, per The Sun. 

'I simultaneously really do know who I am, but I also have no f***ing clue,' he explained to the outlet.

'I'm just figuring that out. I was going through a lot and exploring things. I don't know if anyone here has ever tried mushrooms but it's a crazy thing.'

In the song, Sharpest Tool - which is the fourth track on the album - Carpenter sings about an ex possibly going back to a past lover. 

'We never talk about how you/Found God at your ex's house, always/Made sure that the phone was face-down/Seems like overnight, I'm just the b***h you hate now.'

While she could be taking aim at Shawn, Sabrina could also be hinting at another past romance with Disney channel alum, Joshua Bassett. The pair first sparked romantic rumors in 2020, but seemingly split the following year. 

CAMILA'S 'OBSESSION' WITH SABRINA

Since the album's release, Sabrina's fans have accused Camila of being 'obsessed' with the Espresso star - and 'copying' her aesthetic.

In an X thread - which has more than 47.6 million views - @dontblamealex compiled a selection of instances where there were eerie similarities between the two singers.

The account claimed that Camila was 'liking multiple posts of Sabrina without following her' in 2023.

'Even her friends and producers aren't safe,' she added.

The post also suggested that Sabrina's lyrics in Taste - a song about leaving your mark behind on a lover after they move on from you - are about said 'obsession'.

'I heard you're back together and if that's true/ You'll just have to taste me when he's kissin' you,' she sings.

'If you want forever, and I bet you do. Just know you'll taste me too.'

People have also noted Camila's comparisons to Jenna Ortega - who stars alongside Sabrina in the music video - as the singer was known for her raven tresses and sweeping bangs.

Many have also accused the Havana hitmaker of 'copying' Sabrina's aesthetics - from dying her hair platinum blonde to posing in near identical outfits as part of her rebrand for the album C, XOXO.

Camila has also praised Espresso as the 'song of the summer' in an interview earlier this year. 

However, fans of Camila's have defended the singer, and many have claimed that it is in fact Sabrina who is 'obsessed'.

In a counter thread on X, @diorISliar accused Sabrina of 'copying the artcover of the song for the Short n' Sweet tracklist reveal' from Camila's artwork for her single Bad Liar years earlier.

She also compared Sabrina's Espresso video to Camila's 'Liar' - as both feature the songstresses being pulled into a police car. 

Most recently, Camila had gone back to her raven tresses. However, she may have potentially thrown shade at Sabrina when recently posing while seductively biting a finger - in what could be seen as a reference to Sabrina's album artwork for Short n' Sweet.
