Small, child-like fingers had been spotted poking out of an enclosed wooden trailer being towed in Arizona.

When police pulled over the driver, they found three girls aged between 11 and 14 hidden in the back amid squalid conditions.

There was no ventilation, and pictures released by the Coconino County Superior Court later revealed a toilet in the corner made of a bucket, trash bag and plastic seat.

There was also a dingy brown couch, camping chairs, stroller and other junk crammed inside.

The driver was Samuel Bateman - a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints (FDLS) and self-professed polygamist 'prophet' who claimed to have 20 wives, including child brides as young as nine.

Chilling bodycam footage from August 2022 showed the moment he was handcuffed in Flagstaff, looking miserable and with his belly hanging over his pants.

He was later charged with a sickening array of child sex crimes.

Now more than two years later, the former cult leader, 48, has finally been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Bateman pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit transportation of a minor for sexual activity and one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

He was sentenced to 50 years on each count, to be served concurrently.
