The Rúben Amorim era began with a stalemate at Portman Road. Find the best facts and Opta data from the game with our Ipswich vs Man Utd stats page.
Rúben Amorim’s reign as Manchester United manager began on Sunday with a draw at Ipswich Town.
United made a blistering start to life under their new manager, scoring the first goal of the Amorim era after just 81 seconds.
Amad Diallo, deployed in an unfamiliar right wing-back role, raced away down the right before crossing low for Marcus Rashford, who was starting through the middle for the first time in the league this season, to score from close range. It meant Amorim became only the second permanent manager in Premier League history to see his side score within the opening two minutes of his very first game in the competition, along with David Moyes with Everton in March 2002.
There was a buzz about the visitors following that early goal, and the away fans sang their manager’s name, but it was to prove something of a false dawn.
United struggled to create much else of note – the chance that produced Rashford’s goal was to be their best chance in xG terms of the entire game – and it was their newly promoted opponents who looked by far the more dangerous for much of the rest of the game.
Liam Delap missed a huge chance to equalise late in the first half, denied by a fine block by André Onana in the United goal, but just a few minutes later, Ipswich were level from a much more difficult chance. Omari Hutchinson struck from distance via a small deflection off Noussair Mazraoui’s head, meaning only Manchester City (7) and Nottingham Forest (5) have scored more Premier League goals from outside the box this season than Ipswich (4). All four of those goals have been scored by different players.
At the break, it felt like the game was set up for a grandstand second half, but an uneventful 45 minutes meant there was no change to the scoreline.
The result means Amorims kicks off life at Old Trafford with something to show for his team’s work. The performance left him knowing there’s plenty to do.
