Fatemeh Mohajerani, the spokesperson for the Iranian government, announced that a 20-year cooperation agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia will be signed soon.
She stated, “We hope to witness the signing of the comprehensive cooperation document between the two countries on January 18th of this year.”
On Wednesday, January 8th, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported that Fatemeh Mohajerani confirmed detailed discussions about this cooperation document had taken place.
While the details of the agreement have not been disclosed, it is believed that Iran has accepted the changes Russia requested in the agreement.
Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned on January 6th that “The comprehensive agreement between Iran and Russia updates and complements the previous document. This agreement was approved by both countries earlier this summer, but we were seeking a time to sign it.”
In 2001, during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, the Islamic Republic and Russia signed a strategic 20-year agreement.
With the expiration of the agreement in 2021, it was automatically extended for five more years.
Kazem Jalali, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, previously stated that, according to plans, Masoud Pezeshkian would travel to Moscow on January 18th to sign the comprehensive agreement between Iran and Russia.
