“Congratulations to Joseph Aoun and the dear Lebanese people,” the Iranian foreign minister said in a post on his X account on Friday.
“Iran supports a stable, secure and independent Lebanon where all Lebanese people can live without foreign occupation and threats,” he added.
“Just as always, we cooperate with any government that represents the aspirations of the Lebanese people, guarantees their welfare and safeguards Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” Araqchi stated.
The Lebanese lawmakers on Thursday ended a two-year presidential deadlock by electing General Joseph Aoun, the respected army commander, as the nation’s 14th president.
Joseph Aoun is the latest military figure to ascend to the presidency, joining predecessors such as Fouad Chehab and Michel Sleiman.
