New Zealand struck first after just seven minutes through Eli Just.
The forward finished smartly after excellent hold-up play from Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood, giving the All Whites an early advantage.
Iran responded positively and almost levelled when captain Mehdi Taremi embarked on a driving run from deep before striking the post.

The equaliser eventually arrived in the 32nd minute.
After New Zealand failed to clear their lines, right-back Ramin Rezaeian continued his forward run and fired home to bring his side level.
The match remained finely balanced heading into the second half, but New Zealand restored their lead shortly after the restart.
Just grabbed his second goal of the evening after capitalising on a promising attack to put the Oceania side back in front.
Iran refused to go away, however, and produced another response.
Rezaeian turned provider this time, delivering a dangerous cross from the right that was met by Mohammad Mohebbi, whose header found the net via the post.
