On his return to Tehran late Thursday, Pezeshkian provided an overview of the 2024 BRICS summit, held in Kazan, Russia, marking Iran's first participation as a full member of the bloc.
He stated that "security, economic, and social issues" were the focus of discussions at the 16th BRICS Summit.
“BRICS seeks to counter US unilateralism tied to the dollar, which enables sanctions that worsen global economic challenges,” Pezeshkian said. He added that the bloc agreed to establish a new fund as an alternative to the International Monetary Fund to counter US policies, aiming to protect financial exchanges among member nations.
Pezeshkian highlighted the summit’s 32-page final declaration, which included a condemnation of Israeli crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.
“The statement was notably strong in condemning the killings and atrocities committed by Israel,” he remarked.
The declaration also stressed the importance of deepening cooperation across financial, economic, cultural, scientific, and security sectors within the bloc.
“If we can implement the goals of this organization and the discussions and agreements made at this meeting, the conspiracy by the United States and its allies will gradually be neutralized,” Pezeshkian emphasized.
The Kazan Declaration, with the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to solidarity, peace, and a fairer international order.
Pezeshkian described the Islamic Republic’s participation as “an excellent opportunity for bilateral talks with various countries.” He also quoted UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who expressed a desire to visit Iran, highlighting the importance of resolving bilateral issues independently and avoiding external interference.
The two leaders met for the first time on the sidelines of the summit, alongside other high-level discussions. Pezeshkian also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both sides agreed to push forward with Tehran-Beijing agreements and strengthen bilateral ties.
The Iranian president arrived in Kazan on Tuesday night following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the summit, he held meetings with leaders from Russia, China, Egypt, South Africa, Belarus, Venezuela, Bolivia, the UAE, as well as the prime ministers of India and Ethiopia.
Iran officially joined BRICS in January 2024, following acceptance as a full member alongside Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, now represents about 40% of the world’s population and a quarter of global GDP.
