Is Elon Musk on the way to embracing religion?

I was mortified to discover that the link in Thursday night’s email note to an interview with Rabbi Yakov Shapiro went to a program that I had not seen before. The program started with an introductory video segment containing very offensive content. To those who clicked on it, please accept my apologies for this. It has been changed to a far better Shapiro interview in the online version of the note here, and as shown below.

Rabbi Yakov Shapiro presents the argument that Zionism is actually a repudiation of Judaism and that criticism of Israel is a defense of Jews. This rabbi is one of the most eloquent and knowledgeable teachers on the vast differences between Zionism and authentic Judaism. This is only one of numerous video interviews in which he has explained this issue. If you watch anything, this is the top one to view and listen to. He will turn your views of Israel upside down.

Also, another of the added links was incorrect. Below is the corrected one.

Today, I won’t go into the many important stories we have published last week other than to draw your attention to the astonishing item on Elon Musk, who now praises the benefits of religion, saying secularism leaves people “in despair.” He is absolutely correct, although that does not necessarily apply, regardless of what Pope Francis might suggest, to all religions.

Still, we will take this from one of the world’s currently most influential people, who is, however, sadly not a religious person. I find Musk to be a very interesting, unpredictable person who we should all be praying for. There is much about him to criticize and be wary of, but also, especially in the past few years, much to praise and be grateful for. I never give up on or condemn persons who are doing some good, especially when it costs them, and they are persecuted for doing so – as he regularly does – and more frequently in recent months.

He needs to encounter the love of Christ through those who have hope for him – no matter how unlikely that may seem.

I participated in a 75-minute conference call with one of our major donors and some of our team last week. It was really fascinating and instructive for all of us. It was a welcome, upbeat interruption to our usually intense days. The donor is himself an exceptionally knowledgeable person about many of the more controversial major issues that we cover, and he provided some delightfully helpful input to the team.

His knowledge of the history behind the Ukraine and Israel conflicts was especially useful. For example, did you know that Germany sent Lenin to Russia to destroy it?

We also discussed the destructive influence of television on Western Christian culture and family life. One person commented that televisions are “brainwashing machines.” We all agreed.

Few of us have them in our homes, or if we do, we do not view the popular commercial programs and all of the other socially destructive junk. Even then, it was noted that watching television alters the brain waves and thinking processes, especially during the childhood years.

My wife and I did not have a television in our home while raising our eight children for at least the first 15 years of our marriage. Our parents and most others thought we were extreme and depriving our children. The children barely cared. One person even remarked, “How do you know what to buy?” We shook our head at that one. We did not at all need television to know what to buy for our family and home.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say. Our children are all doing well, are educated, happy, clear thinkers, socially normal and vibrant, and we are amazed with the way they are raising our 29 grandchildren.

It was mentioned that the common practice of putting a television in a prominent place in the family home lacked common sense. When parents do that, they unintentionally give the TV authority over the home, and it replaces the perceived role of the father in forming the minds and future of the children, but also the parents – and they don’t even realize it. It is an incredibly powerful weapon for social manipulation.

There was a lot more wisdom and knowledge shared during the discussion. One more was the importance of every day and all day focusing on joy, but without ignoring hard realities. Joy is still possible while fighting great battles.
