The attack targeted a school in Jabalia that was being used as a shelter for people displaced by the ongoing war, medical sources told Reuters. The majority of the casualties are reported to be children and women, with many victims being treated at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military claimed that the airstrike was a "precise strike" targeting an "operational meeting" of fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to the military, 12 fighters involved in recent rocket attacks and other activities against Israel were present at the site. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as casualties, including many children, arrived at the hospital, often transported on carts or in civilian vehicles due to the ongoing Israeli genocidal war. The hospital struggled to cope with the influx of wounded, with many patients lying on the floors of the emergency department.

The situation was further complicated by a drone strike that ignited fires in tents within the school grounds, which had been serving as a makeshift evacuation center for hundreds of displaced families for several months. The flames spread rapidly, causing additional civilian casualties.

Since the beginning of Israeli slaughter on October 7, 2023, at least 42,438 people have been killed and 99,246 wounded in attacks across Gaza, according to local health authorities.
