In a preview to the infuriating yet also hilarious Senate confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth, who Trump has chosen to be his Secretary of Defense in the incoming administration, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) appeared on MSNBC’s “Deadline” on Monday, January 13 and went utterly berserk over the nomination, saying that Hegseth is so “unqualified” that his nomination is nearly a “joke.”
That commentary previewed the utter chaos of the hearing for Hegseth, during which a number of leftist senators started shouting at Mr. Hegseth, with others doing everything from using his children to attack him to banging the table while shouting at him over his stance on issues like women’s combat roles.
In any case, before all that, Sen. Blumenthal went on MSNBC to discuss the matter of Mr. Hegseth’s nomination. “Deadline” host Nicolle Wallace, presenting the issue and obviously angling to draw an attack of Hegseth out of Sen. Blumenthal, kicked things off by saying, “Do you know anything of what is in the background investigation into Pete Hegseth?”
Replying, Sen. Blumenthal went with what she wanted right form the start, alleging that Hegseth ran two non-profit veteran groups “into the ground.” He said, “We’ve asked to see the background report. We’ve been denied access to it. In fact, we’ve asked repeatedly myself and other members of the committee, and we’ve asked for other records. I’ve written to the leadership of the committee twice, asking for documents and other materials that relate to his financial mismanagement of the two veterans organizations that he ran into the ground.”
Continuing, he went on to add that Hegseth is, in his view, entirely underqualified, telling her, while ignoring Hegseth’s status as a highly-decorated combat veteran, “But let’s be very clear, Nicole, even with what we know in the public record so far, he is probably the most unqualified nominee for a position of serious consequence in the United States government in recent history.”
Building on that, the senator suggested that members of the armed forces would be deleteriously impacted by having such a decorated combat veteran in command instead of a career paper-pusher, snapping, “It would be unserious, a joke, except that the position is so consequential, commanding 3.4 or more million Americans dedicated to our national defense, serving in uniform, putting themselves in harm’s way, risking their lives.
The woke senator then added, repeating the claim about Hegseth being responsible for the failure of the non-profits, “And he has never run an organization with a budget larger than $15 million. And those two organizations, he ran into the ground with deficits year after year, spending more than he received.”
Concluding, the senator then declared that the Senate Armed Forces Committee must reject Mr. Hegseth because of that alleged inexperience, telling Wallace, as the segment on him drew to a close, “So I think we have enough right now to say to every member of that committee, there should be a no vote against Pete Hegseth.”
