Do either of these sides have what it takes to challenge Germany for top spot in Group E at the 2026 FIFA World Cup? We look ahead to Ivory Coast vs Ecuador with our prediction and preview.
Ivory Coast vs Ecuador: The Key Insights
- Ivory Coast are regarded as slight favourites to win this match against Ecuador, coming out on top in 38.6% of the Opta supercomputer’s 25,000 simulations.
- Ecuador boasted the strongest defence in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, conceding just five goals across 18 matches. They also lost the fewest matches (2).
- Ivory Coast won eight of their 10 matches in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup (D2) and were one of only two teams in the CAF section not to concede a single goal.
There is a presumption that Ivory Coast and Ecuador will simply be battling for second place in Group E, with Germany expected to storm through a group that also includes debutants Curaçao. But to assume so would do both teams a great disservice; each excelled during qualifying, and for good reason – their squads are packed with quality.
Ivory Coast have bundles of exciting attacking talent in the form of Yan Diomande, Amad Diallo and Bazoumana Touré, while Ecuador boast strong defensive assets such as Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié and Moisés Caicedo.
It may seem unlikely at first glance, but when these two nations face off in Philadelphia at 19:00 Eastern Time on 14 June (or at midnight into 15 June in the United Kingdom), it will mark the first meeting between them. That is partly because neither country has made much of an impression at the FIFA World Cup before, with only seven previous combined participations.
Given the calibre of players Ivory Coast have produced over the years – namely Didier Drogba and brothers Kolo and Yaya Touré – it may be somewhat surprising to learn that this will be just their fourth appearance at the World Cup and their first since 2014. They have never progressed beyond the ground stage.
They had no trouble qualifying for the 2026 edition, going unbeaten across 10 matches and remarkably keeping as many clean sheets. Tunisia were the only other CAF nation to keep a clean sheet in every qualifying game.

Their 25 goals was also the most of any nation to qualify from the CAF region, as was their 15 unique goal scorers. Simon Adingra perhaps played the largest role, with a team-high five goal involvements, consisting of two goals and three assists.
And Ecuador were arguably even more impressive during qualifying when considering they had to do so via the CONMEBOL section, which contains serious quality in depth.
They were beaten just twice across 18 games – away to Argentina and Brazil – while conceding a mere five goals. Both figures were the best of any CONMEBOL side, and their second-place finish to reigning World Cup champions Argentina was their joint-best effort, along with 2002.
Pacho, now a back-to-back UEFA Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain, deserves huge credit. He was the only outfield player to play every single minute for any CONMEBOL nation during qualifying, starting and finishing all 18 matches.
Meanwhile, according to Opta’s expected goals on target (xGOT) model, Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez prevented 3.8 goals during the qualifiers, the most of any keeper whose nation reached the finals.

Ecuador scored only 14 goals themselves during qualifying, but it was often a familiar name who provided the necessary spark in the final third. Enner Valencia, who captains the nation, scored eight of those 14 goals and assisted two more.
The former Premier League forward comes alive on the big stage. He has scored six of Ecuador’s last seven World Cup goals, netting three apiece in 2014 and 2022.
Ecuador are unbeaten in 19 games since a 1-0 defeat away to Brazil in September 2024, winning their World Cup warm-up matches against Saudi Arabia and Guatemala.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, have won their last three matches heading into the tournament, defeating South Korea and Scotland without conceding a goal in March, before coming from behind to beat France away from home on 4 June.
What’s clear is that if either side can start the tournament with a decisive victory over the other, they both have more than enough quality to put serious pressure on Germany in Group E.
