Jason Momoa‘s historical epic series “Chief of War” has set its premiere date at Apple TV+.
The drama series will debut with its first two episodes on Aug. 1, with new episodes dropping weekly thereafter through Sept. 19. Based on true events, the nine-episode series “follows warrior Ka’iana (Momoa) as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century,” per the official logline.
Along with Momoa, the cast includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
“Chief of War” was originally commissioned at Apple back in 2022. It is the second TV series Momoa has made with the streaming arm of the tech giant, followed by the post-apocalyptic series “See,” which aired for three seasons.
Momoa co-created the show with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who have native Hawaiian ancestry. Both serve as executive producers, with Momoa directing the season finale. Doug Jung serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include: Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Mendoza, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten. Justin Chon directed the first two episodes and executive produces. Fifth Season is the studio.
This will mark the first time Momoa has written for television. He previously co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film “Road to Paloma,” which was released in 2014. He and Pa’a Sibbett also co-wrote the story for the feature “The Last Manhunt,” with Momoa appearing onscreen in a supporting role. Momoa starred in the feature “Braven” in 2018, which was co-written by Pa’a Sibbett.
