The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts has announced its fall 2024 artist in residence: artist/actor/social activist and Brooklynite Joey Bada$$.
Among the youngest to hold the post, at age 29, according to the announcement Bada$$ will be the first AIR to have multiple touch points with the arts and education disciplines throughout the residency: He will conduct masterclasses, lectures, conversations, and Q&A on the topics of music creation, songwriting, the business of music publishing, film and television, and social impact.
“I’m honored and humbled to be invited to be the Artist-In-Residence at Clive Davis Institute at NYU,” he says. “I’m excited to share my experience and knowledge with the students and am certain that I will learn a lot from them as well. I am committed to building community across sectors and this is another beautiful step in that journey.”
“We are thrilled to host Joey,” says Nicholas Sansano, Chair of the Clive Davis Institute. “In our opinion, the current economic model of the music industry does not fully allow for creatives to do one thing as a sole source of income and sustained relevance. Joey, the multihyphenate performer, songwriter, actor, and social advocate, can convey this all-too-real message to our students with first hand credibility. Of equal, or perhaps even greater importance, is his investment in the mentorship and holistic wellness of young developing professionals. He is a relatively young artist who is already making a lasting impact by prioritizing a very tangible commitment to the greater good – actions and messages our students need to see and hear.”
Bada$$ was the founder of Pro Era and Beast Coast hip-hop collectives, star of the 2021 Academy Award-winning Netflix short film “Two Distant Strangers,” and is currently in production on Season 5 of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” which premieres on the Starz network this winter. He was recently recognized as the Winner of Generaciones Tequila Impact Award at the 2024 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Event for founding ImpactMENtorship, a program that provides free mentorship for men of color. The program is going into its second year, featuring artist Denzel Curry, NFL player Stefon Diggs, KidSuper designer Colm Dillane and applications remain open until the end of September.
Past artist residencies included Pharrell Williams, Dawn Richard, Corinne Bailey Rae, Swizz Beatz, and Jack Antonoff.
Bada$$ recently released his new single and visual “Tell Me,” featuring Chlöe, on Columbia Records.
