Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as the MP for Holborn & St Pancras and triggered a by-election headache for Andy Burnham.
The ex-Prime Minister, who vowed to remain as the local MP until the next general election, made the final U-turn of his political career shortly before Mr Burnham faces his first Commons showdown since entering No10.
Sir Keir was first elected as the MP for Holborn & St Pancras in 2015, with his 30,509 vote majority in 2017 being whittled down to 11,572 in 2024.
Speaking to The Camden New Journal about his resignation, Sir Keir said: “It has been a huge honour and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country and to have taken over from Frank Dobson, who was such a great constituency MP and a member of the last Labour Government.
"I will now focus on other things and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world."
