Keith Kellogg called for ground troops in Iran and the resumption of assassinations of Iranian leadership, including top diplomat Abbas Araghchi, during a recent appearance on Fox News.
Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general and former U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine in President Donald Trump’s second administration, told Jesse Watters Tuesday that the U.S. military should once again consider assassinating members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as Araghchi. Araghchi, who survived the strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in February, played a major role in helping to negotiate the Memorandum of Understanding in June. In a recent interview, he described the aftermath of the February attack and how he had to climb out from beneath rubble. Since ancient times, most civilizations have recognized that official diplomats and messengers should be immune from capital punishment and violence, in what is known as “diplomatic immunity.”
Kellogg made similar comments during a Fox News appearance Monday, saying the U.S. should “change out” its own negotiations team but also that U.S. boots on the ground would eventually be necessary.
“You’re going to need ground troops to do something. That doesn’t mean they go all the way to Tehran,” Kellogg said. “Then I’m not advocating that at all. But you could take a couple key strategic targets, that gives the president leverage and controls their economy.”
The Iran War has continued to escalate in recent days, with the U.S. military announcing late Thursday that it had carried out more strikes against Iran for the 13th consecutive night.
Iranian media reported explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas Thursday, a hub for transporting military supplies, and explosions on Qeshm Island, where Iranian naval assets are stored. A U.S. missile attack on the outskirts of Ahvaz on the Karun River also killed four and wounded others, according to Iranian media.
The Iranian military said Friday that it had carried out several drone attacks on American military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, in retaliation against the latest wave of strikes from the U.S.
