Kids who grew up in the '00s go wild as cult game RETURNS… but it looks very different

RuneScape fans are rejoicing after it was announced that a brand new game called Dragonwilds is on the way.

The new open-world survival adventure is set in the same universe as the original game, which was released in 2001.

'Embark on a dragon-slaying adventure on the long-forgotten continent of Ashenfall, in a brand new adventure built in Unreal Engine 5,' the official teaser reads.

'Level up your skills to unlock powerful magical skill spells. Harness the power of anima to shape the environment around you, uncover ancient Dragonkin vaults and battle legendary RuneScape creatures.'

While an official launch date for the latest game has yet to be confirmed, fans can get a sneak peek at it in action on a livestream on April 15.

And it seems as though gamers area already going wild for Dragonwilds, with many expressing how excited they are to play.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one enthused: 'Wow this looks dope to be honest. I miss RuneScape so much.'

'This looks sick,' another agreed. 'If they nail the co-op and keep the RuneScape feel, it could be a hit.'

A third wrote: 'Time to lose another 25 years of my life.'

'I might just have to tap back in just for nostalgias sake,' continued a fourth.   

Others were slightly taken aback by the graphics and said the preview looked hugely different to the original RuneScape world.

'If RuneScape wasn't in the title I wouldn't even know this was RuneScape,' said one.

Agreeing, another said: 'I'm saying the same thing. Looks nothing like RS... it looks like Enshrouded to me. But let's be honest every survival game looks almost the same at this point.'

'Barely recognize this game,' a third commented.

A fourth posted: 'I don't know if the name RuneScape should be on the title for this one. Just feels like it's being forced in order to get RuneScape players to try the game.'

RuneScape is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Jagex.

The game has had over 300 million accounts created and was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest and most-updated free MMORPG.

In 2013, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard explained why RuneScape has proved to be so popular.

'It's because RuneScape is unique!' he exclaimed to DailyMail.com. 'It's always been easy to jump in: it's free to get started and runs from your web browser and doesn't the need any download.

'The gameplay is also different from most other online RPGs – RuneScape is about freedom to do your own thing without restrictions; you can be any type of character you want, you can explore a whole world, you can choose from a wide variety of gameplay from crafting to fighting, from trading to questing – it's all up to you.

'It's also less action intensive than most similar games, which makes it a more relaxing experience that you can take at your own pace.'
