Korea Box Office: Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Outpaces ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Again in Strong Second Weekend

The Odyssey” ruled the South Korean box office during the weekend of Aug. 14–16.

According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the Christopher Nolan-directed tentpole generated $13.2 million from 1,691,744 admissions over the three-day frame across 2,114 screens, capturing 59.07% of the total weekend market. The film grew its sophomore session by nearly 28%, lifting its cumulative South Korean gross to $35.2 million from 4,542,480 total admissions since its Aug. 5 rollout.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day” held onto second place in its third weekend, bringing in $5.6 million from 767,839 admissions over the frame. The film accounted for 25.47% of the weekend market, pushing its cumulative haul to $53.5 million from 7,279,373 admissions.

“Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” retained third place, generating $906,294 from 133,928 admissions over the three-day window. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the musical fantasy adventure follows Princess Romi, Heartsping, and their companions exploring an undersea kingdom to rescue Queen Velita. The family feature has accumulated $4.2 million from 633,527 viewers since its Aug. 5 launch.

The local action-comedy sequel “Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage” opened in fourth place, pulling in $827,800 from 120,982 admissions over the weekend. Directed by Lee Cheol-ha and starring Uhm Jung-hwa, Park Sung-woong, Lee Sang-yun, and Sooyoung, the comedy tracks a former secret agent turned twisted-doughnut shop owner whose family cruise turns into a hostage crisis orchestrated by international mercenaries. The film has gathered $1.3 million from 203,968 total admissions.

Anime mystery entry “Detective Conan the Movie: Fallen Angel of the Highway” was in fifth place, taking $831,509 from 116,521 admissions. Directed by Takahiro Hasui, the latest installment in the franchise tracks Conan Edogawa investigating high-speed vehicular sabotage on an expressway network. Since opening on Aug. 12, the film has earned $1.5 million from 226,028 admissions.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” debuted in sixth place, capturing $272,230 from 39,639 admissions. Since its Aug. 13 release, the title has brought in $330,430 from 47,625 admissions. Sci-fi survival thriller “Hope” was in seventh place, adding $280,866 from 38,708 admissions. Directed by Na Hong-Jin and starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, the village-set alien encounter thriller has pushed its cumulative haul to $33.8 million from 4,475,560 ticket buyers.

Japanese director Tomoaki Fujino’s personal family documentary “What Should We Have Done?” took eighth place, pulling in $69,362 from 9,499 admissions over the frame to lift its total to $490,387.

Faith-based animated feature “David” claimed ninth place, adding $45,188 from 6,714 admissions to bring its gross to $2 million from 298,694 total viewers.

Rounding out the top ten was a re-release of the 2018 Queen musical biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which drew $32,941 from 4,234 admissions over the weekend, extending its historic South Korean cumulative gross to $60.9 million from 9,954,658 tickets.

The overall market collective gross for the weekend was $22.3 million, almost on par with last week’s $22.9 million.
