Kratos will officially return as the protagonist of another God of War game after sitting on the sidelines for the upcoming Faye-led entry.
God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight onto Kratos’ late wife following her death at the beginning of 2018’s God of War. However, Santa Monica Studio has now confirmed that the Ghost of Sparta will be back immediately afterward.
Speaking during a dedicated God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog revealed that the next game will star Kratos and connect directly to Faye’s story.
New Kratos-led God of War will continue Laufey’s story
Barlog confirmed that the next Kratos-led God of War game will arrive after Laufey and directly connect to its story.
No title, trailer, gameplay, platforms, or release window were revealed, so it remains unclear what Kratos’ next adventure will look like.
The announcement goes further than Barlog’s previous assurance that the franchise would continue producing games about Kratos.
“There’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history,” he said following Laufey’s June reveal. Game Director Ariel Lawrence added: “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”
Barlog has now confirmed that Laufey is actively setting up what comes next, describing the game as “a continuation of what came before” that will help prepare and expand the franchise’s future.
This seemingly establishes Laufey as a narrative bridge into Kratos’ next chapter rather than an entirely separate detour from the main story.
God of War Laufey gets February 2027 release date
Santa Monica Studio also announced that God of War: Laufey will release on February 16, 2027, for PlayStation 5.
The game begins after Faye’s funeral, when she unexpectedly awakens in the Everywhen, described by PlayStation as the afterlife of the gods. There, she learns that the plans she created to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk.
Faye will encounter gods and creatures from several different mythologies, including the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and Begtse, a war deity associated with Tibetan Buddhism. However, Santa Monica Studio has not confirmed that either mythology will become the setting of Kratos’ next game.
The studio is also working on remakes of the original God of War trilogy, although that project remains in the early stages of development.
