Labour has been criticised by motorists for failing to act decisively enough to address the soaring cost of petrol and diesel.

Earlier today, the Government announced it would integrate price data from its Fuel Finder tool into Google Maps to help drivers save.

The Labour MP for Peckham said on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Tackling affordability is one of the top priorities of this Government.

"We're making it easier for families with a car to save an average of £40 a year by working with Google Maps to show real-time prices at the pump."

Despite this, the post was criticised as drivers accused the Government of not doing enough to protect motorists from price shocks at the pumps.

Many social media users took aim at the potential savings, noting that it would save £3.33 a month, or 80p a week.

Others questioned whether the post was satire, while some noted that fuel price comparison apps had been available for years.

One user said: "That's it? The Govt is earning extra billions in tax revenue from these price increases and that's the best you can do? Absolutely useless."

Michael Passingham, cars expert at Which?, praised the Government for making it easier to find fuel, but warned that tools needed to be reliable to make a difference.

"If service stations fail to update their Fuel Finder data, then the Competition and Markets Authority needs to step in to make this work," he said.

The CMA has the ability to slap forecourts and operators with huge fines if they fail to adhere to the terms of Fuel Finder.

Many have called on the Government to make a decision on fuel duty to ensure that drivers continue to bear the brunt of soaring petrol and diesel prices.

Former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that fuel duty would be frozen until the end of the year, including the rolling 5p per litre cut first introduced after Russia invaded Ukraine.

From January 1, 2027, fuel duty will increase by 3p per litre to 55.95p, before rising to pre-2022 levels of 57.95p per litre, with a further announcement expected to be made in the upcoming Budget.

A Treasury spokesperson said: "We know families are feeling the impact of higher prices, pushed up by conflicts overseas.

"The Chancellor is focused on giving households and businesses a bit of breathing space where we can.

"That's why we have removed VAT from electricity bills, capped bus fares in England at £2 in 2027, extended the 5p fuel duty cut, and frozen rail fares and prescription charges."
