Latam Airlines Achieves Record Profits in Post-Bankruptcy Comeback

Latam Airlines, Latin America’s largest carrier, has posted remarkable financial results for 2024. The company’s net profits tripled in the fourth quarter, reaching $271.9 million.

This surge pushed Latam’s annual net profit to a record $977 million, with adjusted EBITDAR rising 28% to $865.9 million. These impressive figures mark a significant milestone in Latam’s recovery journey.

The airline successfully emerged from bankruptcy restructuring in 2020 and returned to the New York Stock Exchange in July. Since its relisting, Latam’s shares have climbed 22.6%, reflecting growing investor confidence.

Latam’s financial strategy has been crucial to its resurgence. The company refinanced most of its non-fleet-related debt in 2024, reducing interest expenses and strengthening its balance sheet.

Management is now considering a share buyback program of up to $150 million, further signaling financial stability. Looking ahead, Latam has revised its capacity growth forecast upwards to 7-9% for the year.

The airline projects an adjusted EBITDAR between $3.25 billion and $3.6 billion for 2025, indicating continued optimism about its growth trajectory. However, Latam‘s success comes amid broader industry challenges.

Other regional airlines, particularly in Brazil, are facing difficulties. Azul SA and Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA’s major shareholder are exploring a merger, potentially creating a new competitor for Latam.

Despite these industry headwinds, Latam’s robust performance and strategic initiatives position it well for the future. The airline’s journey from bankruptcy to record profits demonstrates its resilience and adaptability in the volatile aviation sector.
