Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “10 Things I Hate About You” musical is coming to Broadway next year.

The show, based on the 1999 rom-com starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, will begin preview performances exactly one year from now, on Aug. 17, 2027. Opening night, as well as casting and theater information haven’t been announced.

Dunham is adapting the musical’s book with Jessica Huang, while Jepsen is writing the music and lyrics with Ethan Gruska. Christopher Wheeldon is directing and choreographing with music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Tom Kitt. Mike Bosner, whose credits include “Shucked,” “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” will serve as producer.

A retelling of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” the film version of “10 Things I Hate About You” follows the Stratford sisters, whose strict father won’t allow the younger Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) to date until her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does first. When a new student named Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) pursues Bianca, she suggests he find someone to set up with Kat. So Cameron plays matchmaker, paying one of Padua High School’s bad boys Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to take Kat out on a date. A cult favorite, the movie launched the careers of Gordon-Levitt, Stiles and Ledger.

A logline for the Broadway show describes “10 Things I Hate About You” as a “rebellious” musical about “growing up, discovering yourself, and refusing to live by others’ expectations. Amid the crushes, cliques and teenage angst, two sisters set out to define themselves on their own terms.”
