Liverpool Come From Behind to Extend Premier League Lead

Liverpool came from behind at Anfield to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points. Look back at the action with the best facts and Opta data in our Liverpool vs Leicester stats page.

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table after coming from behind to defeat Leicester City at Anfield on Boxing Day.

The night started well for Leicester when Jordan Ayew scored their first shot of the night in the sixth minute. The Ghanaian striker received the ball at his feet inside the box before turning and expertly placing the ball past Alisson in the Liverpool goal to give the away side a shock lead.

Liverpool applied pressure throughout the first half in search of an equaliser, but it took until the first minute of added time at the end of the half for them to find the back of the net. After a neat passing move that started from the back, Cody Gakpo found some space outside the box before cutting in and bending an excellent shot into the net past the outstretched arm of Jakub Stolarczyk.

Arne Slot’s side only had to wait three minutes and 44 seconds into the second half to take the lead for the first time on the night. Curtis Jones scored his third Premier League goal of 2024-25, tapping in from close range after a neat pass from Alexis Mac Allister.

Mohamed Salah added a third for Liverpool with eight minutes remaining, curling an exquisite strike into the Leicester net to score his 100th home goal in the Premier League. It was his seventh Premier League goal scored on Boxing Day, too – no current player has as many as the Egyptian.

Liverpool’s win followed a defeat for Chelsea and more points dropped by Manchester City, while Arsenal play on Friday night versus Ipswich. They now lead the Premier League table by seven points with a game in hand on their rivals. For Leicester, they drop into the relegation zone following this defeat and Wolves’ second successive win under new manager Vitor Pereira, as they defeated Manchester United earlier in the day.
